I am writing to comment AGAINST the repeal of net neutrality. This proceeding has no benefit for consumers across the U.S.; rather, this only benefits the Telecom giants by handing over monopolistic advantages to them. The large incumbent ISPs in the United States hold a monopoly or duopoly in almost all markets, have one of the worst customer feedback ratings of any industry in the United States, and deliver much slower speeds than many other developed countries have. Some support of this repeal presumes that the free market will better serve U.S. citizens than a managed regulated market. This is a fine sentiment, but as you must know from your studies of economics, de-regulation only works when you have real competition: when numerous small firms compete against one another. What we have is an Oligopoly, where a few large firms dominate the market. To boot, they have geographical monopolies wherein only they are allowed by law to serve certain cities and locations! De-regulation will only serve to encourage these companies to abandon innovation and efficiency to win customers in favor of simply gouging customers who have no choice but to buy their product. How is this in any way American? How does this benefit the American people you are tasked with protecting? The repeated attempts by large providers e.g. Comcast to make community, city, county, etc. based broadband illegal show that they are unable to compete on a real level playing field and want to suborn the law to prevent real competitors because they know they are charging far too much and delivering far too little relative to small innovative mom and pop ISP's such as Northern California's SONIC.NET. Internet access is a necessity in today's world; to communicate effectively with our families, friends, business associates, and representatives, we use this technological marvel. We are able to share thoughts and ideas across not only our vast continent, but with the rest of our fellow humans as well. We have seen mathematical problems that were previously thought to be unsolvable subsequently solved after hundreds of thousands of people worked together to help find a solution. We are witnessing scientific and technological advancements today that only a decade ago would have been inconceivable, because we are able to share our information freely and with ease. I implore each and every one of you to consider the American people, and the ethics that we as a country wish to stand for. We should not be viewed - internally and externally - as a country run by profit, where rather than a real level playing field for innovation and progress we have a private law, that serves to benefit only those with the most money to spend to make the law act to their own advantage, at the expense of both their competitors and their customers, that is to say at the expense of the vast majority of Americans. It is clear that despite probably illegal bot manipulation of the public comments that has been exposed, the American voters and taxpayers overwhelmingly favor retaining Net Neutrality. Repealing it will benefit only a small number of already oligopolistic companies in one industry at the expense of the entire rest of the nation, and a very high expense at that in real terms.
