The FCC chairman, having set forth a plan to disregard net neutrality rules, is thereby disregarding the people who, as the economic split between those in the lowest and highest tax brackets continues to widen into a gulf, are increasingly overwhelming the low income and poverty bracket; those who are most desperately in need of affordable and fair access, including speed, of the internet. With the chairman’s decision, the FTC will have no authority with teeth to address those internet companies which price gauge or slow down the speed of websites unable or unwilling to pay increased rates or agree to less favorable terms in contract renewals. Vital information on the internet is more than the speed of a streaming movie service, it is equal access for a well informed public and constituents. The internet has become a proving ground, another capitalistic frontier on which the lowest earners can build businesses and grow into the American dream of economic prosperity. This ideal of America is the most prominent concept of the ability to pursue happiness and wealth here, and the federal government must do well to protect this tenant of our nation.
