If there is something that could unite both sides of this very divided country it is that ending net neutrality is Un-american. This underminds the both the free market principles of many on the right and the protection of the people championed by many on tbe left. The Internet was developed and created using taxpayer dollars and it should remain a public good and regulated like other public utilities. It is not optional anymore either. My children are required to use the Internet for schoolwork. Without net neutrality schools would be required to pay for access. Schools in less wealthy areas that are already struggling would become further behind and taxpayers would be asked for more funding. So why are a handul of telcom companies allowed to control access and profit from it? I can think of a number of ways that ending net neutrality would be detrimental to everyday Americans. I have spent many years as a volunteer in a number of non-profits where every dollar counts. We used the Internet to schedule meetings, share documents, as well as get information. Having to pay more for the Internet would have impacted our ability to serve and help people. Small businesses and startups use the Internet to grow. Without fair access, entrenched companies would win and we would stifle innovation and entrepreneurship and competition. It has also allowed people to work remotely, meaning they could remain near friends and family while still earning a paycheck. In my case the Internet is what is allowing us to move to an area where we have our friends and a lower cost of living. Allowing the few big telecom companies to charge more for access also undermines the concepts of free speech and free market, so why is it even be considered? The FCC needs to not only keep the net neutral but also see that it regulated as a utility not like something that is optional.
