The FCC should reclassify internet service providers as common carriers, with title 2 oversight over those internet service providers. Conditionally limiting the speed of internet access gets in the way of competition between large and small companies. If a large company can afford to pay an ISP some money, then can completely shut down access to a competitors service (or, slow them down enough to where their service is not a viable option). That only encourages monopolistic business practices, which actively weakens our capitalist system in this country. The internet would be a completely different place if ISPs had the ability to set the rules on which ip addresses had priority traffic. Yes, they say they won't do this, but there's nothing stopping them from doing this exact thing, if it means profits. What's the difference between paying a local gang off for "protection" and paying off ISPs for "guaranteed access"? Conceptually, they are the same thing. In summary, history has shown that when a person or a group of people are given power, they find a way to exploit that power to either gain more power or earn money. If the FCC does not reclassify internet service providers as common carriers, any internet service provider has the ability to use their vast influence to restrict who can access services online, unless those services are willing to incentivize the ISP in another way. The FCC must reclassify ISPs as common carriers, with title 2 oversight.
