The poorly named Restoring Internet Freedom rollback of Title II protections on internet service providers is a harmful to internet users and dangerous to our nation. Unrestricted access to the internet is vital to an informed public; because there are so few options of ISPs (I've only ever lived in places with 1 or 2), internet users will be forced to deal with whatever restrictions and pricing the ISPs wish to use. We've already seen these large companies attempt to squash dissent with technical means (see the manipulation of Tumblr to make it difficult for users to follow the net neutrality movement), and we've seen the ridiculous micro-transaction-style fine-graining pricing of internet access in countries where net neutrality is not enforced. Further, this move will quash small businesses because they will be unable to pay the price that large companies do for increased web access. While these issues are concerning and frustrating, I'm even more concerned about the potential for ISPs to sway politics. It's easy to imagine an ISP refusing or charging more for access to content that their leadership doesn't approve of. Depending on their affiliation, this might mean free access to fox news and breitbart and high prices for washington post and huffington post, or vice versa. Regardless of your political affiliation, I hope you agree that we don't want corporations to control our information intake.
